The Project Team

This is a project initiated by the Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC), with an objective to make use of the modern IT tools like GIS and WebGIS for local level planning and development.


Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC) is a Research & Development cum Training & Extension centre, situated in Mundur Panchayath of Palakkad District in Kerala.


This registered autonomous institution was set up by Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP), the premier peoples' science movement of India, in 1987 with the support from Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India and Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE, formerly STEC), Govt. of Kerala.


The objectives of IRTC are:- technology development, adaptive research, adaptation and modification of technology suitable for rural application and sustainable development, dissemination of technologies/technology packages and transfer, training and extension, promotion of local inventiveness and workout local level development plans and integrated S&T packages and management models for strengthening local economies.

During the last two decades, IRTC has taken up more than 150 research projects in diverse areas such as energy, rural technology, education, health, environment, agriculture and allied areas, resource based local level planning, income generating activities for rural women, etc. Apart from this, it has organised more than two dozen major campaign/outreach programmes among students, youths and local communities.


IRTC is working with research grants from the Central and State Governments through DST, NCSTC, MNES, KSCSTE, KVIC, Suchitwa Mission, DDWS, etc.


IRTC also work in collaboration with various Local Self Governments in local level planning, watershed development, master plan preparation, solid waste management, perspective plan preparation, geographical information system for local level planning, water quality studies, rain water harvesting, alternate livelihood programmes, etc., and is a Govt. accredited/ approved agency in these areas.


It also undertakes various training and extension programmes in local level development, rural technologies, livelihood programmes and technology development.


IRTC campus is situated in a rural setting with cost-effective constructions and simple community living. Yet, there are laboratories, field plots, experimental units for energy, waste disposal, watershed programmes, hostels, staff quarters, guest house, library, and modern communication facilities.
